As with pretty much all modern smartphones these days, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 comes with a fingerprint sensor, but unlike the company’s other smartphones like the Galaxy S21, its fingerprint sensor sits on the side of phone. This is versus the in-display sensor that Samsung uses for the Galaxy S21.
In a way this makes sense because otherwise Samsung would need to put a sensor on the outer display and one for the inner display, but that could change with the Galaxy Z Fold 4.
A patent discovered by LetsGoDigital has revealed that Samsung is exploring the idea of a dual-sided fingerprint sensor. This is essentially a single fingerprint sensor that could work on either side, meaning that it would work for the outer display as well as the inner display, thus saving Samsung the trouble of having to implement two separate sensors.
As the patent was filed for back in April 2020, it has been suggested that this means that its implementation would most likely be for the next-gen foldable, if it actually materializes.
To be honest, this feature isn’t actually necessary. The current method used by Samsung actually works out pretty well since it is also a single fingerprint sensor to authenticate the user regardless of which side of the display they’re using.
This isn’t to say we won’t welcome the inclusion of an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor that works on both screens, but what do you think? Is this really necessary?
