Oppo could be next to develop their own smartphone chipset
With the Google Pixel 6 officially launched, we can now add Google to the list of companies that make their own custom chipsets for their phones, but we’re not stopping there. A recent report from Nikkei has revealed that Oppo could be next.
The publication claims that Oppo is looking into developing their own custom chipsets that could debut in 2023 or 2024. Apparently Oppo is hoping that TSMC will be able to build their chipsets and utilize the company’s 3nm process, which if they’re successful would be quite a big win on their part.
For those unfamiliar, the smaller the process, the more efficient the chip is. This is because smaller processes allow the transistors to be placed closer together, which in turn allows them to communicate with each other faster, resulting in a chip that is smaller but more efficient at the same time.
Like we said, Oppo is not alone in such an endeavor. Aside from Google, other companies like Apple, Samsung, and Huawei have all been making their own chipsets, thus further reducing their reliance on third-party companies like Qualcomm and MediaTek.
Whether or not Oppo will be able to come up with something compelling remains to be seen, but it is rather exciting because Oppo is under the same parent company as other brands like OnePlus, it is possible that we could see future OnePlus phones utilize this custom chipset.
