Smartphone charging speeds have increased significantly in the past few years. Many Android OEMs including the likes of Xiaomi, Oppo, and OnePlus offer their proprietary fast-charging technologies. These are in addition to the Qualcomm Quick Charge available on all modern Snapdragon-powered smartphones as a standard. The exact generation support differs from model to model though.
This is the reason your Android smartphone’s charging speed may vary depending on what phone you have and what charger you are using to charge. If you are wondering how you can measure the charging speed of your Android phone, this tutorial is here to help you out.
We will use a free but ad-supported Android app called Ampere. It should be noted that this particular app is not your best bet if you are looking for the most accurate charging speeds and an actual meter is a better option. However, the app does give you a good idea of how fast or slow your Android phone is charging, especially while trying out different chargers and cables.
The first step is to install the Ampere app on the Android device you want to test charging speeds for. Start charging the phone as you usually do and launch the application. You will see an interface as shown in the screenshot below. There is “measuring” written at the top and you need to be patient here.
The app will take a few seconds and will start showing the current charging speed. You can also see the minimum and maximum charging speeds. You may notice charging speed fluctuating which Ampere says is due to the Android system providing unstable values.
The above screenshot shows charging speeds for my Poco X3 Pro when charged using the bundled charger and cable. I also tried charging it using Huawei’s SuperCharge charger and by connecting the USB cable to my laptop. You can notice the stark difference in charging speeds in the screenshots below. We would recommend using the same branded charging adapter and cable as your Android device to get the fastest possible charging speeds.
This is how you can check the charging speed of your Android smartphone with ease. You can also get an idea if a particular charger is charging your phone fast enough. Do keep in mind that the exact charging speed can vary depending on various factors. For example, devices are known to charge at a slower rate as they cross the 80% mark and similarly, they charge rapidly when the battery percentage is low.
