Huawei’s latest foldable is finally available outside of China

0

Right before the calendar flipped into 2022, Huawei had one more device to share with the world in the Huawei P50 Pocket. This is a compact foldable phone akin to the Galaxy Z Flip 3, while offering a unique take on the outer cover screen. Instead of opting to use a bar that spans the width of the phone, the P50 Pocket implements a round display similar to what you might find on a Huawei smartwatch.

Huawei has announced that the P50 Pocket and P50 Pro will be available in select regions outside of China. Pricing for the P50 Pro comes in at €1,199 (around $1,353), while the P50 Pocket is priced at €1,299 (around $1,466). According to Huawei, both of these phones are arriving in “key markets across Asia Pacific, The Middle East & Africa, Europe and Latin America.” But the company also confirmed that UK availability will “be announced in due course.”

These phones are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888, as opposed to using Huawei’s Kirin chipsets due to the ongoing trade ban. By using a 4G version of Qualcomm’s chipset, Huawei is able to sell these phones in other regions without infringing on the ban. This also means that you won’t find any Google services, and instead will be relegated to using Huawei’s own app market found within EMUI.

With the Huawei P50 Pro, you’re getting a traditional slab smartphone with a 6.6-inch 2700 x 1228 display, complete with a 120Hz refresh rate. Huawei has also packed a total of four cameras into the back of the phone, found within the two different round cutouts. There’s a 50MP primary camera, a 40MP monochrome lens, a 64MP periscope telephoto lens offering 3.5x optical zoom, and a 13MP ultra-wide sensor. Other features of the Huawei P50 Pro include a 4,360mAh battery complete with 66W SuperCharge wired charging and 50W wireless charging. Huawei also included an IP68 water and dust resistance rating.

As for the Huawei P50 Pocket, the phone sports a 6.9-inch foldable OLED display complete with a variable 120Hz refresh rate. On the back, you’ll find a triple camera setup headlined by the 40MP wide-angle lens, along with a 13MP ultra-wide and 32MP telephoto camera. Paired with the Snapdragon 888 is up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, depending on what configuration you want. Battery life is pretty solid thanks to the 4,000mAh cell which is quite a bit larger than what Samsung offers in the Galaxy Z Flip 3. And when you need to get a bit more juice, you’ll be able to enjoy Huawei’s 40W SuperCharge technology.

Huawei didn’t provide any indication as to when the Huawei P50 Pro or P50 Pocket would officially go on sale. However, the P50 Pro was spotted as available for pre-order in Bulgaria with the pre-order period ending on February 6.
