Over the past few months, Wordle has taken the online world by storm. For those unfamiliar, Wordle is a browser based game that gives you six tries to guess the word of the day. Each word is five characters long and for every letter you get right, the box turns green indicating that it is the correct letter in the right space.
Then if the box turns yellow, it’s the correct letter but in the wrong position. If the box is grey, it means that the letter does not exist in the word at all.
It’s fun and simple and the ability to share it with your friends has resulted in people posting about it daily on their social media accounts. It has gotten so much attention that it even attracted the New York Times where they announced that they would be acquiring the game.
The company says that they will be keeping Wordle free to play, but who knows, maybe they might change their minds further down the road. After all, they are spending money to buy it, why wouldn’t they want to monetize it, right? If you’re worried that one day Wordle will stop being free, not to worry because Aaron Rieke actually discovered that you can actually download it to play it offline, and here’s how.
Download Wordle to your computer
- Launch your browser of choice and go to Wordle’s website
- Right-click anywhere in the page
- Select “Save As” if you’re using Chrome or “Save Page As” if you’re using Safari
- Save it to your destination folder or drive
- Now whenever you want to play Wordle offline, just open the HTML file
Keep in mind that it will not import your previous streaks or scores, so it will be as if you’re playing from scratch again, but if you’re not too fussed about that then this shouldn’t be a problem.
Also, another thing to note is that this works because the creator of Wordle has actually included all the words to the game inside of the HTML file. This means that at some point in time, it will eventually run out of words so while it will probably last you a long time, it won’t last forever.
