Remember the good old days of the feature phones where many of them were built like tanks? These days, a lot of smartphones, especially flagship models, have been designed to be slim, sleek, and luxurious-feeling with materials like glass, but this also means that unlike the trusty Nokia 3310, they don’t always survive drops.
Putting the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra to the test, the folks at PhoneBuff have decided to see how well the phone holds up to being dropped repeatedly, comparing it to Apple’s flagship iPhone 13 Pro Max. Something interesting to note is the use of different materials to build the phones.
With the Galaxy S22 Ultra, Samsung has opted to use Corning’s new Gorilla Glass Victus+, while Apple is using what they have coined the Ceramic Shield. If you don’t have time to watch the video, then spoiler alert: it appears that Apple’s Ceramic Shield seems to hold up better than the Gorilla Glass Victus+.
During the test, both phones appeared to be neck-to-neck, with Samsung edging out the iPhone in some cases, but it was only during the final test where both phones were dropped onto their faces from a height of 1.45m repeatedly which was when the Victus+ glass gave out after the tenth try.
This isn’t to say that the iPhone 13 Pro Max walked away unscathed. Honestly at the end of the test, both phones were incredibly battered, although the iPhone took the win as it still remained fully functional.
