It has been a while since Google last announced the latest version of its Nest WiFi mesh router system. In fact, the last time the company announced a new hardware refresh was back in 2019, so it is most definitely due for an update, and that’s exactly what Google could be working on.
According to a report from 9to5Google, during an APK teardown, the publication discovered references made to a product/service codenamed “sirocco”. For those wondering about the connotations, the previous gen model was codenamed “mistral” and both are named on a type of mediterranean wind from the Sahara desert.
While Google is probably working on a ton of different products and services behind the scenes, the fact that both these codenames share a common theme suggests that “sirocco” could be part of Google’s Nest WiFi range of devices. Unfortunately, apart from the discovery of the codename, there is not much else that could clue us in on what to expect from the device.
That being said, there might be some assumptions we could safely make. For example, one of the features missing from the 2019 update is support for WiFi 6, so it stands to reason that given that it has been 3 years since the last update, support for WiFi 6 or 6E could be one of the new features we can expect.
Since the Nest WiFi also doubled as a smart speaker, perhaps we could look forward to improvements to the speaker quality and Google Assistant, and maybe even more Ethernet ports to support more wired devices. Either way, we won’t know for sure until Google makes the announcement, so hopefully Google will have something to share at I/O 2022.
