HMD Global’s revival of the Nokia brand a few years back came not only with much fanfare, but the promise of giving users a clean, bloat-free, and updated Android experience as well (think more affordable Pixels). Despite some bumps along the way, the company has mostly kept its word of updating its handsets, and the Nokia T20 tablet might soon receive the latest Android 12 software as well.
According to a Nokiamob report posted online, a number of new Geekbench tests show that Nokia is currently working on testing Android 12 in some of its Unisoc-powered devices, which include the Nokia T20 tablet.
The Nokia T20 was launched in November of 2021, and was the first Nokia tablet to come out in a while, after the Nokia N1 tablet from 2015. Aside from the fairly entry-level Unisoc T610 chipset, the device launched with a 10.4-inch LCD display, 32/64GB of internal storage and 3/4GB of RAM, and 8-megapixel main camera, 5-megapixel front camera, and 8,200 mAh battery.
Nokia mostly uses Unisoc chipsets for its entry-level devices, and while it also equips its slightly more expensive handsets with Qualcomm Snapdragon chips, these have mostly stayed within mid-range territory as evidenced by the company’s continued use of Snapdragon 4 Series chipsets. We still have to see a proper “flagship” device from the brand, given that the last premium device it launched was the Nokia 9 Pureview.
Just a few weeks ago, Nokia also began rolling out the Android 12 update for the Nokia XR20 handset.
During the start of the brand’s revival under HMD Global, a lot of Nokia handsets were included in Google’s Android One program, which was aimed at giving consumers timely Android OS upgrades on affordable handsets. Android One also included phones from other manufacturers, although at the moment a majority of devices listed in the program continue to be from Nokia.
