Here’s how the Huawei P50 Pro will gain 5G capabilities

For a relatively modern smartphone that packs some pretty powerful hardware, one of the features missing from the Huawei P50 series would be 5G capabilities. This is largely due to the US sanctions against the company which has prevented them from using US technology, like 5G modems built by Qualcomm, in their phones.

Now the good news is that if you own the Huawei P50 Pro, it looks like your phone is about to gain 5G capabilities thanks to a special case designed for the handset by a company called Soyealink. How this case works is that it has an eSIM embedded inside of it and features a 5G modem that supports the sub-6GHz connection.

This means that when used with the case, the P50 Pro will be able to connect to a 5G network. The case itself is said to measure about 3.2mm thick and weighs 52g, meaning that it will add a bit of thickness and heft to the phone, but if 5G is what you truly want, then short of buying another phone, this seems to be the only solution for now.

We had previously heard rumors that Huawei was developing such a case for the P50 series, and now it looks like it has finally broken cover, although it seems to have been built by another company. It’s actually an intriguing idea and while it is designed with the P50 Pro in mind, we don’t see how it could also be adapted to fit older smartphones that are LTE-only.

The case appears to only be available in China at the moment where it is retailing for CNY 800.
