Long gone are the days where our smartphones had cameras with super low resolutions. These days, the sensors on our smartphone cameras have resolutions that could rival, or in some cases, surpass those of traditional cameras.
In fact, in a post on Weibo, Motorola has confirmed that they are working on a new smartphone, one that is expected to come with a massive 200MP camera sensor. The company’s claim on the social media platform suggests that this will introduce a “new benchmark for image experience”, but whether or not that is accurate remains to be seen.
Not much else is known about the handset right now, but apparently this device will be known as the Motorola Frontier and in addition to the 200MP camera, it will also come with a 50MP ultrawide and a 12MP telephoto, with a 60MP front-facing shooter to top things off. Other rumored specs include 12GB of RAM, a 6.67-inch FHD+ OLED display that will come with a 144Hz refresh rate. It is also rumored to be using Qualcomm’s newly announced Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, meaning that this will be a flagship device.
We would like to point out that a 200MP camera doesn’t necessarily mean that it will take good photos. Good photos obviously can be achieved with good hardware, but there’s more to a photo than its sensor size or resolution. There’s also the image processing software, how you compose the image, how you edit it, and so on, but it will be interesting to see what a 200MP camera can bring to the table.
