The problem with foldable phones is that the foldable display has a limited number of folds before it either develops a very noticeable crease or it breaks. According to Samsung, the number of folds on the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is rated at around 200,000 folds which is actually already pretty decent.
Assuming you flip open and close the phone 100 times a day, that’s roughly about 5.5 years old the hinge mechanism is supposed to fail. But it turns out Samsung’s estimates might have been a little on the lower-end of things because according to a recent video by Polish YouTuber Mrkeybrd, his own test with the Flip 3 found that he managed to get over 400,000 folds before it failed on him.
This is more than twice what Samsung had previously estimated, which means that if the display or hinge failing is one of your main concerns about adopting a foldable phone, this test would suggest you could go for years and will most likely buy a new phone before the mechanism fails on you.
Of course, keep in mind that this is hardly the most scientific way of testing and naturally your mileage may vary. Since no phone is perfect, some devices might have some hidden imperfections that could affect the durability of the hinge and display, but it’s good to know that at least based on this test, it’s better than what we had previously thought.
