Nokia Takes Legal Victory Over OPPO
Finnish tech giant Nokia has been granted a legal victory following a patent dispute that the company filed against OPPO. A decision from the Mannheim Regional Court in Germany has ruled in favor of Nokia, and as a result, OPPO products will eventually be taken off store shelves in the country.
According to a report from the folks over at Nokiamob, the decision involves disputed patents pertaining to 4G (LTE) and 5G Standard Essential Patents (SEPs). Nokia has sued OPPO over nine SEPs and five implementation patents across three German regional courts including Munich and Düsseldorf. This new development has now resulted in a cease and desist order against the Chinese brand, and the eventual ban will also include products from OnePlus, as the company is a subsidiary of the same parent company as OPPO.
Prior to this, the two companies have worked collaboratively since 2018, with Nokia responsible for several smartphone technologies such as the development of 5G connectivity. Last year, OPPO filed a counter-suit against Nokia in several countries, including China.
Nokia and OPPO are both owned by parent brands HMD Global and BBK Electronics, respectively. In addition to OPPO (and OnePlus as mentioned earlier), BBK also owns brands like Realme and Vivo.
