Last month, Netflix officially confirmed that they will be launching an ad-supported tier. This is meant to be a cheaper alternative to the current base subscription to Netflix, something to tempt users to keep their subscription or to start subscribing. Now in the latest announcement, the company has revealed that they will be partnering with Microsoft to help deliver ads to customers.
According to Netflix’s announcement:
“Microsoft has the proven ability to support all our advertising needs as we work together to build a new ad-supported offering. More importantly, Microsoft offered the flexibility to innovate over time on both the technology and sales side, as well as strong privacy protections for our members.”
Netflix has not announced when this ad-supported tier will be going live or how much it will cost, but it certainly looks like things are progressing behind-the-scenes. At the moment, the company’s cheapest subscription is $9.99 for the Basic tier, although in some markets, the company does offer a mobile-only subscription that’s even cheaper.
We’re not sure if this ad-supported tier will match the mobile subscription’s price or if it will be the same, but either way, we’ll have to wait and see when the company does eventually take the new tier live.
