WhatsApp will soon let users keep disappearing messages

0

One of the privacy features of WhatsApp comes in the form of disappearing messages. This allows users to send messages to each other that will eventually delete themselves. The idea behind it is to allow users to hold conversations without there being an official log for it.

Now according to WABetaInfo, it appears that WhatsApp is working on a new feature called kept messages that will allow users to “keep” disappearing messages in a chat. This is different from a starred message because in chats where disappearing messages are enabled, these messages cannot be starred, so “keeping” a message would be the next best thing.

For those who might be a bit confused as to the point (and privacy concerns) of being able to keep a message designed to disappear, don’t worry. This is because according to the current beta, it seems that anyone can keep or upkeep a message. This means that if someone decides to keep a message but you don’t want them to, you can upkeep it later on.

Group admins will also have control over this feature, but we’re not sure how this will work. Maybe group admins can limit it so that only admins can keep/unkeep messages, or change the permission levels of users. Keep in mind that there are other ways of saving disappearing messages, like taking a screenshot or a photo, so it’s not a 100% foolproof solution to begin with.
