Android 13’s release was announced yesterday and those who own eligible Google Pixel handsets should be receiving the update. Unfortunately, it appears that there might be a glitch in the rollout because some Pixel owners are now reporting that they are receiving the Android 12 update instead.
Given that most Pixel phones should already be running Android 12, this update doesn’t do anything other than forcing users to waste 2.03GB in bandwidth. According to Android Authority, when they checked, the only thing that changed was the build number. The publication also reports that they too have encountered issues.
They also report that this affected devices like the Google Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6a, suggesting that this could be an issue due to Google’s Tensor chipset and the roll back mechanism that Google implemented that would prevent newer Pixel phones from rolling back to Android 12 following the Android 13 update.
It is unclear what could be behind the cause of the problem and Google has not officially commented on the issue yet, so we’ll just have to wait and see. Also, it doesn’t seem to be a particularly widespread issues as many other Pixel owners have had no issues updating to Android 13, but if you are affected, then hopefully Google will have some answers for us soon.
