The early days of the smartphone were quite exciting as the tech was relatively new, so it was always nice to see what kind of new and interesting features companies would introduce. These days, the improvements aren’t quite as obvious anymore, and so many companies are now trying to compete on the camera front.
For those who might be eyeing the Samsung Galaxy S23 series that is expected to launch in 2023, a report from ETNews out of Korea is suggesting that for the Galaxy S23 Ultra handset, the phone is expected to feature a 200MP main camera. If the report is accurate, Samsung would actually be kind of “late” to the market.
This is because handsets like the Motorola X30 Pro beat Samsung to the market with a 200MP camera, and there are rumors that Xiaomi could be next. Samsung actually has a couple of different 200MP sensors that they have made, so we’re not sure which of them the company will be using.
That being said, megapixel count is usually more about marketing. Unless you’re the type that prints your photos on large formats like posts or billboards, or if you need to do some deep cropping and don’t want to lose the details, for the most part, having such a high megapixel count when you upload to social media probably won’t make too big of a difference.
In any case, only time will tell if the reports are true so until then, it’s probably best to take it with a grain of salt.
