Huawei has confirmed that its upcoming Mate 50 smartphones will be officially announced next month, and now according to the company, it appears that reservations for the Mate 50 series has managed to rack up over 1 million reservations across Huawei’s own website and also various e-commerce platforms.
In a way it shouldn’t be too surprising simply because the Mate 50 series will most likely only be available in China at the start, and given how large China’s population is, 1 million reservations doesn’t seem like a stretch. Plus presumably since reservations won’t require a deposit unlike pre-orders, anyone can simply reserve a handset without any real loss to them if they change their minds later.
But it’s also kind of surprising how many people are interested in the phone. As you might know, Huawei is on the US Entity List which prevents them from doing business with US companies and vice versa. It also means that Huawei’s phones will not be able to run Google’s services and won’t have access to mobile technology like Qualcomm’s 5G modems.
This means that in this age of 5G, the Mate 50 series will be one of the few, if not only, high-end flagship without 5G capabilities. Seeing as how the China smartphone market is extremely competitive with other local brands, getting 1 million reservations is quite an impressive feat.
It remains to be seen how many of those reservations translate into actual sales, but it looks like the phone is off to a pretty good start.
