LG Velvet Review 4

LG’s 6G tests can now travel a further distance

While 5G has been rolling out the past couple of years, let’s face it, it is far from being as ubiquitous as its predecessor, 4G. This means that it will be plenty more years to go before we can really even start to think about 6G.

That being said, companies are not wasting time trying to develop the tech anyway, and according to LG’s latest tests, they have managed to demonstrate a transmission of 6G THz over a distance of 320 meters outdoors. Some of you might scoff at 320 meters, but it’s actually a 300% jump from before where it only managed to go 100 meters, so this is a huge improvement albeit far from being commercially ready.

6G is expected to offer even faster speeds compared to 5G with the potential of hitting speeds as fast as 1Tbps. According to Dr. Kim Byoung-hoon, CTO and executive vice president of LG Electronics:

“With the success of our latest demonstration, we are one step closer to realizing 6G speeds of 1 terabit (TB) per second in both indoor and outdoor urban areas. LG will continue to cooperate with research institutes and industry innovators to further solidify its leadership in 6G technology. We expect 6G to be a major driver of future business and new user experiences, and there is no place we’d rather be than at the forefront of its development.”

Like we said, it will still take a very long time before 6G becomes commercially available, but it’s nice to see that progress is being made. LG is not alone in trying to develop the technology. Other companies such as Samsung and Huawei have also begun similar efforts.
