Voice messages are useful if you need to convey a particularly long message that you don’t want to type out, or if you want to convey your tone of voice to prevent misunderstanding, or if you’re not free to type it out.
While it has its uses, it can also be annoying because sometimes you’re in a place where it’s not convenient to listen to voice messages, meaning that you’ll have to wait before you can hear its contents. The good news is that if you use Google Messages, that could be solved in a future update.
As noted by 9to5Google in their APK teardown, Google is working on an update to Google Messages where users will have an option to transcribe voice messages that they have received into text, allowing users to see their voice messages instead of listening to them.
While we haven’t tested out the feature ourselves to see how well it actually works, 9to5Google notes that so far it seems to be doing a pretty good job and the system seems to understand where punctuation should be placed. Of course, other factors could affect its accuracy like the quality of the voice message, so if it was sent in somewhere that was noisy, it might be trickier to transcribe.
Either way, it sounds like it could be a useful feature and we expect that over time with refinements, it should become better.
