The Matter 1.0 smart home standard has just been launched. This is great news for consumers who are looking to build a smart home ecosystem but don’t want to worry about whether or not certain smart home devices will be able to work with each other.
Like we previously said, it might take a while before we start seeing smart home devices gain Matter compatibility, but the good news is that in the coming months, Google has confirmed that they will be updating its Nest products to be compatible with the Matter 1.0 standard.
This will include products like Nest smart speakers, Nest smart displays, and also routers like the recently announced Nest WiFi Pro. According to Google:
“Your Android phone will automatically detect a Matter device and help you securely set it up quickly. Matter setup and app linking will be available by default on billions of Android devices with Google’s launch of Matter support later this year. We are even working directly with top device makers to ensure we have support across as many Matter-supported devices as possible. We’re also updating our existing Google Nest smart speakers, smart displays and routers to control Matter devices.”
This is actually pretty cool and it’s good to see Google take the initiative. Google is one of the members of the alliance which also includes other smart home device makers like Apple, Amazon, and Samsung, just to name a few, so moving forwards, we should be able to expect a more cohesive smart home ecosystem.
