When it comes to health-based wearables, for the most part, they come in the form of either a fitness tracker or a smartwatch. It seems that Samsung might be looking to compete in a different market space because if reports from South Korea are accurate, the company is working on a smart ring.
The concept of smart rings isn’t new. Oura is probably the most prolific smart ring out there and it is a good alternative to devices like smartwatches or fitness trackers due to its relative low-profile design and the fact that it can be easily worn as a fashion accessory, making them stand out less for those who are concerned about looks.
The report from Korea claims that Samsung is developing such a device that can monitor the user’s health and fitness activity. The company has even filed a patent with the USPTO for a ring that includes a heart rate monitor and ECG and can also double up as a remote of sorts for a smartphone, tablet, or TV.
Like we said, in the smart ring market, Oura is more or less the default company that everyone thinks of, so if Samsung were to enter that space, they wouldn’t have that much competition. Of course, whether or not they will be able to sell as many smart rings as smartwatches remains to be seen, so we’ll just have to wait and see. Until then, take it with a grain of salt.
