Netflix had previously confirmed that they are developing a new tier which will be cheaper but supported by ads. For those looking to reduce their monthly subscriptions, you’ll be pleased to hear that the new ad-supported tier is now live and will cost you $7 a month, making it a couple of dollars cheaper than the regular tier.
For those wondering what this means if they were to make the switch, obviously there will be ads, but in addition, there will also be some limitations which Netflix has outlined in their announcement post:
- What stays the same: A wide variety of great TV shows and movies; personalized viewing experience; available on a wide range of TV and mobile devices; change or cancel your plan at any time.
- What’s different: Video quality up to 720p/HD (now for both our Basic with Ads and Basic plans); average of 4 to 5 minutes of ads per hour; a limited number of movies and TV shows won’t be available due to licensing restrictions, which we’re working on; no ability to download titles.
Basically, it sounds like if you just want to pay less for Netflix and think that putting up with ads and some of these limitations is worth saving you a few bucks a month, then this could be the tier for you. The new tier should be live in most countries, so log into your Netflix account to make the changes to your subscription.
