TCL’s Ion X is bringing back a feature we wish more phones would have

The problem with many smartphones these days is its battery. This isn’t to say that battery life is terrible, but we’re sure that many miss the days when you could easily swap out the battery of a phone without having to bring it to a repair center.

The good news is that if swappable batteries is something you miss, then you’re in luck because TCL has announced that its Ion X smartphone will be launching on Metro today.

For those unfamiliar, the Ion X is an Android smartphone whose unique selling point (we think) is that it comes with a battery that can be removed. While the battery itself is kind of small at 3,000mAh, the fact that it can be removed means that you can always bring around a spare and swap it out when necessary.

It also means that you don’t have to be as worried about its lifespan because if it drops too low for your liking, you can just change it out for a new one instead of having to take it into a repair center, pay an expensive battery replacement fee, and wait.

That being said, it should be noted that the Ion X isn’t the most powerful phone we’ve seen. Under the hood, it is powered by a MediaTek Helio G25 chipset with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, but there is a microSD card slot that lets you expand on its memory if necessary. There is also a 6-inch 720p display along with a 13MP rear-facing camera and a 5MP front-facing shooter.

Like we said, it’s not a particularly powerful or impressive handset, but if battery is a primary concern of yours, the swappable battery and its very affordable price tag makes it quite an appealing smartphone.
