Motorola recently announced a new device at MWC 2023, but it’s not something you’d usually expect from the brand – the Motorola Defy 2 is a smartphone that comes as a result of a collaboration between Motorola and Bullitt, a UK-based company known for designing and developing tech designed for rugged environments, as well as satellite communications technology.
The Motorola Defy 2 comes with a design that according to the company has been tested thoroughly, allowing it to to survive in rough terrain, including drops, bumps, as well as underwater immersion. In terms of smartphone hardware, the phone comes with a large 6.6” FHD+ display with a 20:9 aspect ratio and 120Hz refresh rate, and a 5000 mAh battery with support for 15W fast-charging and Qi wireless charging. This is all protected by a textured external shell that’s tougher than your average glass-backed smartphone.
Inside the phone is MediaTek’s Dimensity 930 chipset, with 6GB RAM and 128GB of expandable storage. One the back of the phone you’ll find a triple-camera set-up with a 50MP main sensor, 8MP ultrawide sensor, and 2MP macro sensor, alongside an 8MP front facing camera. The handset will launch with Android 12, with upcoming upgrades for Android 13 and 14, as well as five years of security updates.
One big feature that the Defy 2 comes with is support for Bullitt’s Satellite Messenger service, which will allow users to communicate even in isolated areas with zero network coverage. This will be very useful in emergency situations, and for individuals who live in rather far-off areas, who still need access to two-way satellite messaging
Motorola has also introduced the Motorola Defy Satellite Link, a portable Bluetooth-powered accessory that can connect to any smartphone, allowing it to communicate with Bullitt’s Satellite Connect service. Motorola says that the device – like the Defy 2 – is built to be durable, allowing it to be conveniently brought along for camping trips, weekend getaways, and to far-off locations. Once a device is paired with the Satellite Link, it will be able to tap into Bullitt’s satellite communication platform.
As for pricing and availability, the Motorola Defy 2 will be available from Q2 2023 from selected operators across North America, Latin America and Canada, and will be priced from $599 including 12 months of SOS Assist. Meanwhile, the Motorola Defy Satellite Link will be available from Q2 2023 across international retailers, and will come at around $99 for the device only. A bundle including 12 months subscription to the Essentials Messaging service plan (up to 30 two-way messages per month and SOS Assist) will start at $149.
