The Nothing Phone (2) might end up powered by last year’s tech

0

Flagship phones launching this year are largely expected to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Seeing as how the Nothing Phone (2) is expected to be launched this year, it would have been a safe bet to assume the handset would also use similar hardware, but as it turns out that might not be the case.

In a now-edited post on LinkedIn, Qualcomm’s SVP and GM of Mobile, Computer, and XR business congratulated Nothing on the launch of the Nothing Phone (2). Seeing as how the phone hasn’t been launched yet, it seems that this post went up earlier than expected. What’s also interesting is how the post mentions the use of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, a chipset launched in 2022 that was a variant of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

The post has since been edited to remove the mention of the chipset, but the folks at 91mobiles were prudent enough to snag a screenshot of the original post. We have to say that if the post is accurate, it is a little disappointing that the Nothing Phone (2) would use hardware from 2022 for a flagship launching in 2023.

It is possible that for financial reasons, Nothing could be opting to use “older” hardware instead of the latest that Qualcomm has to offer. Also, to be fair to Qualcomm, there is nothing wrong with the performance of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, it’s just that with phones using the Gen 2 this year, customers might now have one less reason to pick up the handset when it does eventually launch, which last we heard could be sooner than we thought.
