A while back, Fairphone announced that it will move forward with the eventual discontinuation of support for the Fairphone 2, several years after providing updates for the device. As such, the company has now issued a follow-up statement of sorts, announcing the final security update for the phone.

In a post from its official Twitter page, Fairphone announced that the last security update for the Fairphone 2 is now available for download. This last software patch is the final update after seven years of continuous software support for the device, a feat that’s very rarely achieved in the smartphone industry.
Fairphone also took the opportunity to thank users who continued to support the brand and the device. Launched back during the days of Android 5 Lollipop, the Fairphone 2 is powered by the Snapdragon 801, which has since stopped receiving official support from Qualcomm.
With all that being said, it’s a bittersweet farewell for users who invested in the device, but at the same time serves as an example that smartphones CAN be supported with long-term software updates and security patches. Fairphone 2 users can check on their phone’s Settings app to see if the final update is now available for download on their device.
