For years, we’ve been hoping that smartphone makers would introduce new types of batteries in their phones that would not only last longer, but would also have a longer lifespan, safer, and so on. But year after year, we’ve kind of been disappointed as the only improvements we’ve seen are to charging times.
That could change soon because for the first-time ever, Xiaomi has managed to stick a 6,000mAh solid-state battery inside a prototype of its Xiaomi 13 smartphone. What’s the big deal, you ask? Similar to how solid-state hard drives are smaller than regular HDDs, this 6,000mAh battery is actually the same size as a 4,500mAh battery, meaning that it will not make the phone thicker, bigger, or heavier, while at the same time giving it more battery life.
Xiaomi also notes that the use of solid-state batteries means that it can even provide up to 20% more power than a lithium-ion battery in the extreme cold. That being said, don’t get too excited as Xiaomi isn’t quite ready to bring these batteries to the market just yet. We’re not sure when they will, but it’s good to see that progress is being made.
