One of the annoying features of stock Android is that when you enter the PIN to unlock your phone, you will need to tap “enter” to confirm it, which is an extra step. This is a feature that custom ROMs have managed to skip entirely, but the good news is that if you’re running a phone with stock Android, you will soon be able to skip that step as well.
According to a report from XDA Developers’ Mishaal Rahman, it seems that in the latest Developer Preview for Android 14, he has discovered a new toggle which will allow users to “auto confirm” a PIN after entering it. Basically what this does is that when you type in the correct PIN, instead of having to tap enter, the phone will automatically confirm it and unlock.
That being said, there are some “limitations” to this feature, namely it will only work with PINs that are 6 digits or longer. This means that if you’re still using a 4 digit PIN (and you really shouldn’t), you will still need to tap “enter” to confirm it. Presumably this is done for security reasons since 4 digit PINs are easier to crack compared to 6 digit ones, and Google probably doesn’t want the phones of its users unlocking by accident.
Before we get too excited, it will still be some time before Android 14 is available to the public, which means that just like some other features we’ve seen in earlier Android builds in the past, there is a chance that Google could scrap it ahead of the public release, so don’t hold your breath just yet.
