One of the awesome software features in the Pixel 7 came in the form of a “Photo Unblur” tool in Google Photos. As the name suggests, this helps users clean up photos that might have been blurry. Now it looks like Google could be extending that feature to videos as well and could debut in time for the Pixel 8.
This is according to an APK teardown by the folks over at 9to5Google where they discovered some evidence to suggest that Video Unblur could soon be a feature in Google Photos. At the moment, the feature doesn’t seem to be working, or even if it is working, there doesn’t appear to be any discernible difference after it has been applied.
It is possible that the feature isn’t ready yet or hasn’t been optimized yet which is why nothing seems to have happened when 9to5Google tested it out, but if it works anything like Photo Unblur, then this could be an invaluable feature for videographers who are trying to get the best footage possible.
That being said, blurry photos and videos are very different beasts. Because videos involve a lot of frames, unblurring a video would require considerably more work compared to fixing a photo that might be blurry due to a little hand shakiness. In any case, perhaps we’ll learn more about this feature at I/O 2023 or when the Pixel 8 launches, but it is definitely something we’re interested in and are keeping an eye on.
