Devices like tracking tags and smartphones that can be tracked typically require the device to be turned on for it to work. This means that if you want to use Android’s Find My Device feature, you have to hope that your phone has enough juice for you to keep tracking it. If the battery is dead, then that’s pretty much it, right?
The good news is that Google could be making some changes to Find My Device in the future. This is according to a report from 91mobiles who are reporting on a tip from tipster Kuba Wojciechowski where they claim that Google is working on an update to Find My Device that will work even if the device is turned off.
According to the report, it seems that Google wants to build its own network of Android phones similar to Apple’s “Find My” network. For those unfamiliar, Apple’s Find My network utilizes iOS devices that are nearby to ping the location of a missing iPhone/iPad. Given that there are so many iPhones and iPads around, users can use it to track their missing devices with relative accuracy.
The report claims that Google has shared this feature with OEMs that are enrolled in the company’s Early Access Program which means that come Android 14, Google could launch a massive network of Android devices that will make tracking lost or stolen devices much easier.
