The Pixel 7a’s Display is Surely Capable, but it isn’t Perfect

0

DXOMARK recently revealed its test scores on the Google Pixel 7a’s display, which shows some interesting aspects to the hardware found on the phone. While Pixel phones aren’t exactly known for groundbreaking screens and display quality, the new scores – on paper at least – show that there’s a bit more to Google’s newest midrange handset.

According to DXOMARK, the Pixel 7a placed 11th in global rankings, with an overall score of 140. The phone excelled at rendering colors in various lighting conditions, and was especially smooth during gaming sessions and web-scrolling scenarios. The test adds that the phone was able to manage video frame drops.

It’s not perfect however – one the 7a’s biggest weaknesses was outdoor viewing. Despite being an OLED panel, the screen lacked brightness in outdoor conditions, meaning that users might need to grab a bit of shade when using the 7a on very sunny days. The display also lacked details with darker shades in HDR10 videos, and sometimes displayed rainbow artifacts at certain angles.

In terms of display hardware, the Pixel 7a features a 6.1-inch OLED panel with an FHD+ resolution and 429 ppi, with a 20:9 aspect ratio. One big upgrade with the 7a is the inclusion of a 90hz refresh rate, which was absent on last year’s Pixel 6a.
