Samsung’s plan to replace Google with Bing might be dead

0

Last month, it was reported that Samsung and Microsoft were in talks about the possibility of Bing replacing Google as the default search engine on Samsung’s phones. If that were to pass, the implications could have been huge, but it looks like Google has nothing to worry about anymore.

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, which cited “people familiar with the matter”, it seems that Samsung has pumped the brakes on the idea. The report also goes on to claim that the company will not be making this change anytime soon, which for all intents and purposes suggests that this idea could be dead in the water.

We’re not sure what led Samsung to make this decision. It is possible that maybe Google stepped in and made Samsung an offer they couldn’t refuse if they were to drop this idea. Alternatively, Samsung might not have been too impressed with Bing and Microsoft’s AI efforts. Another possibility is that maybe Samsung could be planning something AI-related of their own and would prefer if their users use their own services.

That being said, it was unclear how this could happen in the first place. One of Google’s requirements for Android OEMs would be to use the company’s products and services, with Google Search being one of them. This means that if Samsung were to replace Google as the default search, it would most likely be in the form of Samsung Internet, the company’s native mobile browser.

Either way, for now it appears that Google has nothing to worry about.
