Google Weather is about to be launched as a standalone app

Unlike Apple’s iPhones, Google’s Android platform strangely enough does not have a standalone weather app. This doesn’t mean you can’t show the weather, it’s just that it’s not a standalone app and it’s pretty much integrated into Android.

Is this a good or bad thing? We suppose it depends on how you look at it, but if you prefer a standalone app because it could mean more frequent updates without having to update the entire Android OS, then you’re in luck because an APK teardown by 9to5Google has uncovered evidence that Google is planning to make Google Weather a standalone app.

What’s interesting is that Google has already kind of shown signs that this is the direction they will be heading towards. The weather app for Wear OS was released as a separate app from the Google app experience, so for Google to make the same change for smartphones doesn’t seem entirely out of the question.

The report also suggests that Google Weather could be integrated into the Google Clock app, where users will soon be able to display the local weather on the clock itself, which might be handy for some. There is no mention of when these changes are going to come into effect so for now, we’ll just have to practice a bit of patience.
