Smartphone market slump sees Qualcomm cut 415 jobs
It has been over a decade since smartphones were first introduced to the market, and while the initial releases were met with a lot of hype, it’s safe to say that people’s interest have started to wane.
This is because technology for smartphones has more or less peaked, and with every new release, any improvements we see and feel are marginal at best. This is why it doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that the smartphone market isn’t where it is at the moment, so much so that Qualcomm has been forced to let hundreds of employees go.
Qualcomm is one of the biggest smartphone chipset manufacturers and suppliers. The company’s chipsets are used in pretty the majority of Android smartphones and tablets out there. With the ongoing market slump, the company recently filed for the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act with the state of California, which saw them let go of 415 employees from its San Diego headquarters.
The company is also reported to have let as many as 84 workers go in their Bay Area operations. This isn’t the first time in recent times Qualcomm had to lay off employees. Prior to this, the company had conducted similar reductions in December of 2022 and March earlier this year.
