Remember the Google Pixel 4? One of the notable features of the phone was that it supported hands-free gestures, meaning that users could make gestures in the air and the phone would be able to detect it and understand what the user is trying to do.
It was admittedly a novel feature that quickly died out, but now it looks like Xiaomi wants to bring it to their own phones. This is according to a tweet by Kacper Skrzypek who discovered an image that suggests that Xiaomi wants to bring a similar feature to a future smartphone.
Also, one of the upcoming #Xiaomi devices will feature ToF camera on screen (probably tablet), allowing to
*automatically lock screen when you walk a certain distance away
*light screen when you come near device
*play/pause playback
*turn pages
*answer/end calls
*adjust volume pic.twitter.com/0UNiWzlZjk— Kacper Skrzypek 🇵🇱 (@kacskrz) July 1, 2023
Apparently this feature in Xiaomi’s phone will rely on a 3D ToF sensor that is able to detect hand gestures and interpret them. It can also detect other things, like when you walk away from your phone and you forget to lock it, the phone will detect that you’ve walked away and lock it for you.
It is also said to be usable for other things like playing and pausing video playback, skipping music tracks, answering phone calls, and so on. It is unclear which phone Xiaomi will be bringing the feature to, so we’ll just have to wait and see, but in the meantime what do you think? Should these types of features be brought back, or were they better left on the shelf?
