According to the rumors, one of the biggest changes Samsung will be making in the Galaxy Z Flip 5 over its predecessors is by upgrading the size of the external display to one that’s larger and potentially more functional.
But unfortunately if recent leaks are anything to go by, it might be kind of a boring and borderline pointless upgrade. This is according to a series of alleged marketing materials for the Flip 5 that were shared on Twitter by Roland Quandt before being taken down.
Based on the images, it shows how the external display will support widgets and a full keyboard, giving users the ability to type things out on the external display of the phone, but beyond that, we’re not sure what else it has to offer. It doesn’t appear that there will be support for apps, which means that while the display is bigger, functionality wise it will only offer a minor improvement over previous models.
To be fair, Samsung’s Flip 5 isn’t alone in this. Other devices that have sported a larger external display, like the Oppo Find N2 Flip, also lack support for full apps. It seems like a wasted opportunity, but perhaps given time, developers could optimize and update their apps with support for it.
But in Samsung’s case, that could come sooner rather than later. An exclusive report from SamMobile back in June hinted that Samsung and Google could be working together where some of Google’s apps could be optimized for the external display, but we’ll have to wait for the official announcement next week for the full details.
