Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5: Everything We Know so Far

It’s only a few days left before we get to see Samsung’s newest premium foldable handsets, the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5. The South Korean tech giant has undoubtedly been the mainstream face of Android foldables, and a lot of fans are certainly looking forward to the new Z handsets, especially the bigger Z Fold5 – judging from the popularity of the Z Fold4, we can imagine there’s a lot of fanfare in store for the next big Samsung foldable.

While we currently do not have all the full “official” list of specs and features, we’ve nevertheless gotten a ton of hardware speculations from various rumors and leaks from the internet. So what does the Galaxy Z Fold5 have to offer? Well, let’s take a look at what we’ve heard so far.

Design and Display

Let’s start with the phone’s design, which might leave fans with a bit of deja vu. Several renders online seem to indicate that the Z Fold5 will end up bearing a similar look to its predecessor, and if confirmed we can’t really blame Samsung – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Tech informant Yogesh Brar (who has had an accurate track record for leaks) says that the Z Fold5 will come with display specs that are very similar to the previous generation as well. It’s expected that the device will feature an external screen that measures 6.2-inch with FHD+ resolution, and a 7.6-inch QXGA+ AMOLED folding display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

It’s an interesting trend as we’ve seen with other manufacturers, who have decided to keep succeeding hardware designs very similar, as seen on devices like the iPhone 14 and Galaxy S23 Ultra, which do little to distinguish themselves from their predecessors.

One thing to note though is that the ZFold 5 is expected to come with an improved hinge design, which should reduce the gap on the inner screen when folded. A set of images leaked online originally shared by tipster Ahmed Qwaider on Twitter alleges that the Z Fold 5 will have a much lessened gap when closed, which would hopefully result in a much cleaner design.

There’s bound to be a bit of dust and water protection on the new phone, although it could be limited to IPX8 protection, instead of a full IP68 rating. Samsung is also likely to skip the S-Pen slot on this year’s Fold, so folks looking for a bit of stylus action might be disappointed.

Internal Hardware and Cameras

As for what’s inside the phone, it’s highly expected that the Galaxy Z Fold5 will be powered by the impressive Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, as with the rest of Samsung’s 2023 flagship smartphone lineup. It does make sense to use a powerful SoC in such a device, so it shouldn’t be too surprising to see Qualcomm’s latest and greatest arrive in Samsung’s latest foldables.

Other leaks allege that the Z Fold5 will come packing 12GB of RAM inside, and buyers can grab a maxed-out version with 1TB of internal storage, which should be very ideal for users that want to use the foldable for productivity, and even gaming.

It’s also predicted that Samsung might reuse a similar camera set-up for the Z Fold5. If confirmed, this means that users will get a 50MP f/1.8 main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and a 3x 12MP telephoto lens. Meanwhile, front-facing photos and videos are handled by a 10MP f/2.2 lens on the outer screen, joined by a 4MP under-display camera on the inner display.

For battery, the phone is also expected to retain a 4,400 mAh unit as seen on the previous model, which should keep its over shape fairly slim – word on the street is that the Z Fold5 will be 0.8mm thinner and weigh 253g, a bit thinner than the Fold4. Finally, Samsung is very likely to launch the device in Phantom Black, Cream, and Ice Blue colors variants.
