When Samsung first launched their foldable phones, we admit that it felt kind of novel, a phone that could transform into a tablet, but its asking price was borderline ridiculous. Then Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Flip series, a throwback to the good old days of the clamshell phone and we were intrigued.
Fast forward to today, the Flip series is Samsung’s most popular foldable and it’s easy to see why, and today, the company has officially taken the wraps off the latest model in the series, the Galaxy Z Flip 5.
Right off the bat, the Flip 5 looks different from its predecessors, not so much because Samsung revamped the design, but rather they introduced a larger external display, which Samsung is calling the Flex Window. The new external display now measures 3.4-inches, a massive jump from the 1.9-inches from before.
To take advantage of the newer, larger display, Samsung is introducing support for widgets so that more information will be available at a glance. They are also introducing a new Quick Reply feature with a full QWERTY keyboard, meaning that you can reply directly from the external display without having to flip the phone open. Users will also be able to launch Samsung Wallet to make mobile payments or pull up QR codes.
Some previous features will also be carried over, like Flex Cam, where the external display acts as a viewfinder so that users can take photos at interesting angles. As for the inner display, Samsung has maintained the 6.7-inch size with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. Holding all of this together will be the new Flex Hinge design, which boasts a dual rail structure that will make it more resistant to external impacts.
In fact, the phone will come with IPX8 certification for water-resistance, Armor Aluminum frames, and the use of Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus 2 that protects the front and back of the phone.
Under the hood, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and will come with 8GB of RAM and users can choose between 256GB or 512GB of storage. The phone also comes with dual 12MP cameras on the back, and a 10MP selfie cam. A 3,700mAh battery will also be part of the phone and will support 25W charging.
For those who are keen on the Flip 5, it will be available for pre-order starting today and will be available for purchase on the 11th of August. The phone will be priced starting at $999.99 for the 256GB model and it will be available in Mint, Graphite, Cream, and Lavender, along with Blue, Gray, Green, and Yellow, which are exclusive to Samsung.com.
