While its smartphones haven’t always been groundbreaking in terms of worldwide sales, Fairphone’s handsets have nevertheless served as an interesting alternative for smartphone buyers, especially those looking for something outside of the “usual” lineup of brands.
With the tagline “Designed Fairly for You”, Fairphone is hoping that its new Fairphone 5 will be enough to sway buyers who are after a smartphone that doesn’t necessarily fall within the confines of Google’s Android operating system. As such, the Fairphone 5 ships with /e/OS, a fork of lineage OS which itself is based on Android.
In terms of hardware, the Fairphone 5 comes with 8GB of RAM, 256GB of expandable storage, and is powered by the Qualcomm QCM6490, which is a rather interesting choice for a mobile SoC. Other hardware details include a 6.46-inch OLED display with a 90hz refresh rate and 1224 x 2770 pixel resolution, a 4200 mAh battery, and a triple 50MP camera setup, all wrapped up in a chassis with IP55 certification.
With that being said, the Fairphone 5 continues the company’s dedication towards sustainability, as the phone features replaceable modular parts, in addition to software support with five years of Android platform upgrades, and up to eight years of security patches.
As for availability, the device is priced starting at €699 for European markets, and £619 for buyers in the UK. There’s no word of a US release at the moment, although the phone is now up for pre-orders.
