Samsung’s reboot of its Wallet app is no doubt part of an effort to show Google and Apple how digital pass apps are meant to be done, and it looks like it’s adopting some useful features through a new partnership. More specifically, users will soon be able to add driver’s licenses and state IDs on their Samsung Wallet App, thanks to a collaboration between Samsung and IDEMIA.
The feature will be available on devices including the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5, as well as a ton of other Samsung Android phones. Samsung says that this team-up combines its secure digital pass software with IDEMIA’s expertise in identity technologies, and will allow Samsung to utilize ISO/IEC 18013-5 standard to implement mobile licenses and IDs that are secure and private.

The digital IDs will be verified and issued by state DMVs, and will be stored locally on a user’s Samsung phone. The implementation of the new feature will initially be available for users in Arizona and Iowa later this year, and Samsung says that it will be working with more states, in addition to working with the TSA towards a test program to accept mobile driver’s licenses at select airports.
A few months ago, Samsung also added student ID compatibility with Samsung Wallet, which will work with 68 educational institutions across the United States.
