While a lot of the fanfare surrounding Qualcomm’s Snapdragon brand was in part due to the much-anticipated 8 Gen 3 chip, the company isn’t resting its laurels on its high-end SoC alone. As such, Qualcomm finally announced the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, a new midrange mobile SoC that aims to give users top performance, without breaking the bank.
Built on a 4nm process, the 7 Gen 3 features a lot of similar elements found in its more powerful sibling, including support for AI software features and even support for Snapdragon Elite gaming features.
For performance, there’s an integrated Qualcomm Kryo CPU that can reach speeds of up to2.63 GHz, which Qualcomm says is around a 15% improvement versus the previous generation. There’s also support for Quick Charge 5 onboard, which can top up your battery from zero to 50% in five minutes.
This jump in performance also includes performance boosts particularly for gaming sessions, thanks to the included Qualcomm Adreno GPU with support for 120Hz QHD+ displays, and features such as Snapdragon Game Super Resolution, which can intelligently upscale in-game visuals without eating through your battery.
The 7 Gen 3 is also designed to sound good, with support for Snapdragon Sound that enables lossless-quality audio output and stereo-quality recording, in addition to LE Audio with Auracast for public TV audio access, easy sound sharing, and enhanced hearing aid performance.
For imaging, the chip supports photo capture for up to 200MP images, which are processed using features such as the new AI Remosaic feature for reduced grainy discoloration, AI noise reduction, and even AI Video Retouch for super-clear video footage. The chip also supports Qualcomm’s Spectra Triple ISP, that enables capture from three cameras at once with instant parallel processing and smooth zooming, as well as support for for 4K HDR video recording, and Google’s Ultra HDR photo format.
The 7 Gen 3 also features several AI-powered software features, such as the contextually aware Qualcomm Sensing Hub that personal routines and intuitively opens apps at the precise moment you need them, the Qualcomm AI Engine that offers as much as 60% better AI performance per watt, Qualcomm’s Hexagon NPU for better AI network performance, and brand new INT4 precision support for longer-lasting communication, productivity, and more.
Qualcomm adds that the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 will first be adopted by partner OEMs including HONOR and Vivo. Customers can expect the first to be announced this month as well.
