Following the unveiling of Google’s Gemini Advanced and Gemini mobile for Android and iOS, it looks like the company has announced a newer, more improved version with Gemini 1.5, which according to Google features “dramatically-enhanced performance,” with a “breakthrough in long-context understanding across modalities.”
The announcement was made earlier today by Google – Gemini 1.5 Pro is currently a mid-size multimodal model, which will be released for early testing. Google adds that it performs at a similar level to 1.0 Ultra, which was originally announced alongside Gemini’s launch for web and mobile devices. Google further states:
“Gemini 1.5 Pro comes with a standard 128,000 token context window. But starting today, a limited group of developers and enterprise customers can try it with a context window of up to 1 million tokens via AI Studio and Vertex AI in private preview.
As we roll out the full 1 million token context window, we’re actively working on optimizations to improve latency, reduce computational requirements and enhance the user experience. We’re excited for people to try this breakthrough capability, and we share more details on future availability below.”
Understandably, this does bring about questions of Google’s earlier promotion of its Ultra 1.0 model, which up until today was touted as its most powerful AI model yet. Support for Gemini was recently expanded into more countries including Canada, Asia Pacific, Africa, and Latin America to name a few.
