Android DS Emulator “DraStic” is now Free to Download
Following the demise of Nintendo system emulators Yuzu and Citra, it looks like other emulation apps on Android are starting to take precautionary steps so as not to invoke the wrath of the Big N’s legal department, or so it would seem. In any case, it looks like DS emulator DraStic is now free to download over at Google Play, foregoing its usual $4.99 price tag.
In an official Discord post, app developer Exophase clarifies that DraStic will soon be taken down as well, and that the decision had been long coming. As per his post:
“I just changed the app on GPlay to free. I don’t intend to even have it on there for that much longer but I want to make it clear that I don’t have any kind of financial incentive to not opening the source. Releasing the source in short order is something I fully intend on doing.”
“This change can’t be undone, so that’s it. I was already planning on this a while ago so it’s not simply due to the Nintendo stuff, that just made the whole process more urgent which I guess is a good thing because I’m terrible at doing things.”
As mentioned, Nintendo’s legal actions against Yuzu devs Tropic Haze played a part in the current state of things for DraStic, although Exophase states that he will release the source code for the emulator some time in the future.
