Google just killed one of the more appealing features of Google One
One of the features of Google One is that it came with a VPN service. Google initially offered VPN access for those who had a 2TB subscription, but later expanded it to cover all users who subscribed to its Google One plan, regardless of storage amount. Unfortunately, it looks like Google is killing off their VPN service.
According to a report from 9to5Google, Google started sending out emails to Google One subscribers and informed them of changes that they will be making to its services. One of those changes include how they will no longer be offering VPN access. The company does not state when it will be killed off, only to say “later this year”. For now, users who do use the service will continue to be able to do so.
Google told 9to5Google that one of the reasons they’re killing it off is because apparently not many people were using it. It’s actually kind of surprising since the VPN service is part of the Google One subscription. So either people did not know about the VPN service or simply prefer to use a different service.
Take note that this only applies to Google One users. Those who got a Pixel 7 or newer phone will still be able to use the free Pixel VPN that comes bundled with their phones. This service has been guaranteed for at least five years, so you’re still covered.
