After what seemed like an eternity of leaks and rumors and predictions, Google has finally unveiled the Pixel 8a, its newest midrange smartphone. While it retains a lot of what makes it a wallet-friendly device, it does adopt some newer features which give it an edge over previous A-series phones, as well as competing devices on the market.
The Pixel 8a comes with an overall similar design to the Pixel 8, although it does feature a slimmer camera bar and a matte-texture back. The front features a 6.1-inch OLED “Actua” display, which comes with a 1080 x 2400 pixel resolution, and a much higher 120Hz refresh rate this year, and gets super bright at up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness. It does retain Gorilla Glass 3 however, so no Victus action on this one.
Inside you’ll find 8GB of RAM, and a choice of either 128 or 256GB of internal storage, another first for the A-series Pixels. The battery also comes with a slight bump in capacity, and as a result the Pixel 8a is now powered by a 4,492 mAh cell. There’s also support for wireless charging, although charging speeds are still at 18W, same as on the 7a from last year.
As for camera hardware, the Pixel 8a packs a 64MP Quad PD wide camera, 13MP ultrawide camera, and a 13MP front-facing camera. Powering this setup is the same Tensor G3 from the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, and the phone likewise features a lot of the same camera and AI features on its older siblings.
The phone starts at $499 for the base 128GB model, and $550 for the 256GB storage variant, and is available in four different colours including Aloe, Bay, Porcelain, and Obsidian.
