One of the perks of subscribing to Google One is access to the VPN service. Back in April, Google confirmed that they would be killing off its VPN service but did not specify a date, but now we know when, thanks to a report from 9to5Google.
The publication has spotted an update to the Google One support page. It mentions that starting from the 20th of June, 2024, the VPN service offer as part of your subscription will no longer be available. The support page also mentions how to uninstall the VPN from macOS and Windows computers. Users can also delete their VPN profile on mobile devices.
Keep in mind that this shutdown only applies to the Google One VPN. Google also offers a VPN service through its Google Fi internet. If you’re using Google Fi, then this won’t affect you. If you’re only accessing the virtual private network through your Google One subscription, then it’s time to find an alternative.
It is a bit of a pity. There are many cloud storage services available right now. Offering a free VPN as part of the subscription certainly made the service a lot more appealing. If you’re subscribed just for the cloud storage then we suppose it’s no skin off your back.
