While there were many different elements that factored into its somewhat lack-lustre market performance, many seem to agree that the Apple Vision Pro’s $3,500 price tag serves as the main barrier of entry to the Cupertino company’s vision (get it?) of a spatial computing future.
With that being said, new reports seem to indicate that Apple has no plans to launch a Vision Pro 2 anytime soon, suspending development on a sequel device to its first-generation mixed-reality headset. Instead, it’s believed that we’ll see a “cheaper” version of the hardware at around $1,600, which brings its price much closer to that of a high-end iPhone or MacBook.
As for hardware, the cheaper variant will come with some changes to its specifications, including fewer cameras onboard, smaller speakers, and a more basic headband design. At the moment, Apple is still selling the current model which will be available for buyers in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the U.K., and the United States.

While VR and AR headsets aren’t a new kind of product or technology, Apple’s slickly-edited marketing campaigns showcased the Vision Pro as some kind of second coming, somewhat akin to the launch of the original iPhone. If these new reports are true however, it’s clear that the company is re-considering its stance on pumping out expensive AR headwear.
