Google introduced its own lineup of Tensor chipsets a few years ago. These chipsets are made by Samsung and are reportedly based on the Exynos design. But it seems that the upcoming Pixel 9 smartphones could be the very last phones in the lineup that use these Samsung-made Tensor chipsets.
This is according to a report from CTEE. The report claims that the Tensor G5 has already been taped out by TSMC and is expected to be built on TSMC’s 3nm process. The Tensor G4, which will debut in the Pixel 9 series, will be made by Samsung Foundry on their 4nm process.
So what’s the difference, you ask? Apart from being built on a smaller process which has the added advantage of being more efficient and more powerful, the Tensor G5 will apparently be the first truly custom chipset from Google. Like we said, the previous Tensor chipsets were co-designed with Samsung.
This isn’t the first time we’re hearing that Google could ditch Samsung for TSMC. So if you think that you might prefer seeing what the Tensor G5 can do, then you might want to hold off on buying the Pixel 9 this year. The Pixel 9 will be officially announced this August, according to recent invites sent out by Google.
