A lot of Samsung’s focus this year seems to be on its Galaxy AI suite of AI tools. It almost feels like they’re leaving Bixby behind. That won’t be the case, however, according to a report from CNBC. It seems that Samsung will bring some AI capabilities to Bixby later this year.
According to the report, it quotes Samsung mobile chief TM Roh who claims that they will be bringing AI features to its virtual assistant later this year. What’s interesting is that Samsung won’t be borrowing AI features from the likes of OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google Gemini. Instead, the company will use its own AI models.
Bixby was originally launched back in 2017 as Samsung’s answer to the likes of Apple’s Siri and Google Assistant. Unfortunately, it didn’t really quite take off the way the company had hoped. In some ways, it’s similar to how Siri failed to impress iPhone users. It will be interesting to see if the inclusion of AI will make Bixby a better virtual assistant.
To be fair, Android users can already choose from multiple virtual assistants with AI capabilities, like ChatGPT and Google Gemini, but obviously Samsung would prefer if customers were to lock themselves into their ecosystem. The upgraded version of Bixby is expected to launch later this year, but no specific dates were mentioned.
