Are you looking for a new clamshell foldable smartphone? The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 was recently announced and it is one of the most hyped foldable smartphones of 2024. But the question is, is there a better choice? Are there other clamshell foldables that could potentially offer better value for money? One of those phones comes to mind, and it is the Oppo Find N3 Flip and we’ll see how it holds up versus the Galaxy Z Flip 6.
The design language between both phones couldn’t be more different. Oppo has opted for a more obvious camera cutout and an interesting vertical external display. Compared to the Flip 6 which has a more subtle camera cutout and a horizontal external display.
But in terms of size, what are we looking at? The Flip 6 measures 165.1 x 71.9 x 6.9 mm unfolded, versus the Oppo Find N3 Flip which measures 166.4 x 75.8 x 7.8 mm. As you can see, the Find N3 Flip is slightly bigger.
When folded shut, the Flip 6 comes in at Folded: 85.1 x 71.9 x 14.9 mm, while the Oppo Find N3 Flip is 85.5 x 75.8 x 16.5 mm, making it slightly thicker by about 1.6mm. The Flip 6 is also lighter at 187g while Oppo’s foldable weighs 198g. If size and weight are important to you, then it’s obvious that the Flip 6 could be a better phone.
But what about the displays? One of the reasons why the Oppo Find N3 Flip is thicker and heavier versus the Flip 6 is due to its display. The internal foldable display measures 6.8-inches when unfolded, while the Flip 6 measures slightly smaller at 6.7-inches.
Both displays do use similar LTPO AMOLED panels and both have a 120Hz refresh rate. They also both support HDR10+, although the Flip 6 is considerably brighter at a peak brightness of 2,600 nits. The Find N3 Flip, on the other hand, peaks at 1,600 nits, which is a lot less.
Screen brightness comes more into play when you’re outdoors under direct sunlight. Having a brighter screen will let you see your phone properly, so that’s something you should take into consideration.
The Flip 6 also has a marginally higher resolution of 1080×2650, while the Find N3 Flip is 1080×2520. It’s not a particularly huge difference. As for the external display, the Flip 6 has a 3.4-inch display with a peak brightness of 1,600 nits, while the Oppo Find N3 Flip has a 3.26-inch display that peaks at 900 nits.
As we previously mentioned, Oppo has opted for a vertical external display which could have an impact on functionality, but your mileage may vary depending on your personal needs.
Seeing as how the Flip 6 is a phone that launched in 2024, it uses the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. The Find N3 Flip, however, uses a MediaTek Dimensity 9200. MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000 series has been making waves recently, but one thing to note is that the Find N3 Flip is a 2023 phone with 2023 hardware.
Both phones do come with 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage. Both devices also rely on the UFS 4.0 storage system, so they should be similar in terms of their read and write speeds.
The cameras are where things get a little interesting. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 continues to rely on a dual camera setup. It did get upgraded to a 50MP main shooter, but it is still accompanied by a 12MP ultrawide. There is also a 10MP front-facing shooter for selfies.
As for the Oppo Find N3 Flip, it actually uses a triple camera setup which is kind of a rarity for clamshell foldables. This consists of a 50MP wide, a 32MP telephoto, and a 48MP ultrawide, with a 32MP selfie cam on the front. These cameras were designed in collaboration with legendary camera maker Hasselblad.
As for battery, the Oppo Find N3 Flip comes with a 4,300mAh battery versus the Flip 6 which has a 4,000mAh battery. Oppo’s phone also supports faster wired charging at 44W, while the Flip 6 charges at 25W. The Flip 6 also has the advantage of supporting wireless charging, which oddly enough the Oppo phone does not.
Samsung is pricing their brand new Galaxy Z Flip 6 at a starting price of $1,099. This is about $100 more expensive than its predecessor. As for the Oppo Find N3 Flip, it is also priced at the $1,000 mark making it slightly cheaper.
But you should take into consideration that the Oppo Find N3 Flip is a year old while the Flip 6 is new. If you’re more concerned about pricing, the Find N3 Flip is the obvious choice, but if you want to futureproof your purchase, maybe spending that extra $100 could be a better idea.
